Blu-U Light

There is now a treatment for skin conditions such as Acne and Actinic Keratoses (also known as precancerous lesions) that doesn’t depend on internal medications or surgery for treatment.  It is called Blu-U Light Photodynamic Therapy.  Blu-U is a low-intensity light that will not heat your skin.  This treatment is very safe and is well tolerated by most patients.

Treatments are simple.  For mild Acne, the skin is cleansed and the patient sits comfortably while the light is applied to the affected area.  For Moderate Acne and Actinic Keratoses, a topical photosensitizing agent called Levulan is applied directly to the problem areas on your skin.  Abnormal cells, pores, and oil glands absorb the Levulan making these areas more susceptible to the light treatment.

The treatment time with Blu-U can be a little as 20 minutes for mild Acne.  If you have Moderate Acne or Actinic Keratoses the time to complete the treatment is just over an hour (60 minutes for the Levulan to take effect and 8 – 16 minutes under the Blu-U light).

Some patients may experience a mild sunburn-like redness and or peeling after treatment which can last for 2 to 3 days.  After Levulan is applied, the area will be sensitive to sunlight or other intense light sources for 48 hours.  It is important that a sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher is used regularly for the 48 hours following treatment.

Most people require a series of treatments depending upon the condition being treated.
