What causes warts?
A wart develops from a skin infection known as the human papillomavirus, or HPV. This infection enters the skin through a tiny cut or wound and it can take time for a wart to form after being infected; therefore, it can be difficult to determine how you were infected. HPV has hundreds of different strains and should not be confused with the sexually transmitted strains that can cause genital warts. Warts that develop anywhere else on the body are not the same thing.
There are three main types of warts,
- Common warts, which are often found on the fingers or hands
- Flat warts, which often develop on the hands and face
- Plantar warts, which often develop on the soles of the feet, and cause pain when standing or walking
How is a wart treated?
Most warts will go away once the body has gotten rid of the HPV; however, this can take months or even years. Fortunately, our dermatologists can speed up this process along by freezing or surgically removing the wart. Prior to these steps, however, you may want to try over-the-counter topical treatments, as these may also help to shed the wart.
