Mohs Surgery Recovery: What To Expect?

Are you looking for dermatological support to manage your skin cancer? We’re here to help. At Westgate Dermatology and Laser Center in Winston Salem, Thomasville, and Kernersville, we can help you with Mohs surgery, a unique surgery that can help with skin cancer. If you’re interested in this treatment but want to plan your downtime, check out these recovery guidelines to learn more.

Recovery Begins Right After Surgery

Immediately after treatment, your post-surgery pain will get managed by ice and extra-strength over-the-counter pain medications for at least 48 hours. You must avoid showering for at least 24 hours to keep the area dry. Rest as much as possible the day after the procedure and tend to any bruising or swelling of the surgical area.

The day after treatment, you might be able to go to work if your job isn’t too physically straining. If you’re unsure, taking time off for a few days is best to avoid problems. Typically, you can remove the dressing at this point and might be able to shower, depending on what your doctor says. A checkup appointment can ensure that you’re ready.

The Next 5-14 Days After Treatment

After five days, our Westgate Dermatology and Laser Center team will assess your surgical site. Most people who get Mohs surgery can remove their sutures within 5-10 days after surgery. That said, it may take two weeks or more if you get surgery on your back or scalp. We’ll let you know what to expect by inspecting the site first.

Throughout these two weeks, you’ll likely have minimal swelling or bruising left to manage. Your pain should have disappeared during this point as well. Many people get back to exercise or more vigorous jobs now. If, for any reason, you’re still bruised or in pain, contact us right away to figure out what might be happening here.

Long-Term Recovery

During the following weeks, you may have some slight redness and scarring that should go away over the next months and years. If, for any reason, you still have scars, contact us, and we can perform reconstruction procedures to restore your skin. Typically, we wait until you’ve been declared cancer-free to ensure that your skin is safe.
